The mark of excellence is awarded by the Centre for Creativity (CzK) at the Museum of Architecture and Design (MAO) under the joint Made in Slovenia brand. The purpose of this mark is to recognize and promote outstanding achievements in Slovenian design, with the goal of highlighting best practices and encouraging the development of high-quality, innovative, and sustainable products, services, processes, and projects. It strengthens the visibility of Slovenian design both at home and abroad and fosters collaboration between the cultural and creative sectors, the economy, science, and other fields.
The mark of excellence is awarded to individual works—products, services, processes, and projects—created in Slovenia by Slovenian designers. Selections are made through open calls, with recipients decided by expert committees. Since 2020, more than 160 projects have been included in various selections, representing a diverse range of contemporary Slovenian design.
Through these open calls, CzK/MAO monitors contemporary design, architecture, and related production and practices in the field. This ensures transparency, inclusivity, accessibility, and openness to proposals from a wide range of creators, while contributing to the systematic monitoring, evaluation, development, and promotion of quality design and the networking of stakeholders within the Slovenian design sector and beyond.
Each selected work receives a uniquely generated graphic code—the Made in Slovenia mark of excellence. The mark was designed by Studio Kruh following a public competition. Creators or manufacturers use it to label and promote their selected product as a mark of quality and as part of their visual identity in promotional materials, on websites, and on packaging.
Selection criteria generally include design quality, innovation, functionality, sustainability, production quality, predominantly local manufacturing or production, and social relevance, as well as the contribution of Slovenian creators and collectives. Criteria are defined for each call individually, allowing them to be adapted to specific calls and current themes or content priorities.
Products are selected based on the criteria for each call by an expert committee appointed by the organizer, CzK/MAO. Committees include experts from various design fields (product, graphic, unique, and fashion designers), curators, business experts, and others. Between 2019 and 2026, committee members have included: Ana Kyra Bekš, service designer; Mika Cimolini, then head of the CzK program; Tanja Devetak, Faculty of Design and Center for Design Research; Leonora Jakovljević, designer and educator; Andreja Japelj, Atelje Japelj; Ana Kerin, Kana London; Matevž Klanjšek, architect and communication designer; Digna Kosse and Lucas Mullié, Foodcurators; Zala Košnik, then CzK; Urška Krivograd, then CzK; Rok Kuhar, Academy of Fine Arts and Design; Peter Ličen, Lushna Glamping; Martina Malešič, MAO; design collective Oaza; Vasa J. Perović, Faculty of Architecture; Jakob Pintar, Tabar restaurant; Primož Pislak, graphic designer; Matevž Popič, designer; Cvetka Požar, MAO; Nikola Radeljković, Numen / For use; Anja Radović, then head of BIO; Dr. Tanja Roženbergar, Slovenian Ethnographic Museum; Federica Sala, curator and designer; Ajda Schmidt, designer; Luka Stepan, designer; Maja Vardjan, MAO; Boštjan Vuga, architect; and numerous other experts from various fields.
Today, the Made in Slovenia mark of excellence represents a key reference for high-quality Slovenian design and an important mechanism for its recognition, promotion, and development. By systematically selecting top achievements, it contributes to the greater visibility of Slovenian design both at home and internationally.
