FOLDS Coasters

The FOLDS brand is the brainchild of young architects and designers Anja Mencinger and Nikolaj Salaj. Most of Folds' products are made using the same principle of steel processing, where cutting and folding the surfaces creates volume. Viewed from the side, the products dematerialise into two-dimensional symbols of themselves. The tough, durable metal makes them versatile and flexible, but also playful. The minimalist design allows the material to speak for itself and the products to fulfil their functional potential.

The design of the FOLDS coasters is based on an orthogonal regular grid of circles, and by playing a path through this grid, the end result is nine irregular organic shapes of coasters. In this graphic game, the end product is the basic shapes of the coasters, which can be used to create other graphic compositions on the canvas of the dining table. The coasters are made from an industrial semi-finished metal plate using only two production processes, laser cutting and powder coating, which means that modern technology is used to make production efficient. The result is maximum use of technology and maximum design effect with minimum energy consumption. As the product is made entirely of metal, it is highly recyclable and virtually everlasting.
