Kleklja and Carnation are soft scarfs which patterns are a modern interpretation of the Slovenian embroidery heritage.
An accessory with a utilitarian purpose, the scarf assumes the role of an abstract, soft pictorial surface on which narratives are constructed. Over the past decade, the designer has used knitwear to express her love of drawing, pattern, colour, thread structure and knitting. The collection draws inspiration from traditional Slovenian ornamental decoration, reinterpreted in a contemporary style. Modern technology and design approaches provide traditional ethnographic motifs with a new visual identity and practical purpose. This product evokes tradition, but its abstract nature also makes it a contemporary design product.
Scarf Kleklja (bobbin stick)
Kleklja (bobbin stick) is a soft wool or viscose scarf, the pattern of which is a modern interpretation of the Slovenian embroidery heritage. The design, created by Ksenija Baraga, translates the recognizable bobbin lace curve motif into an industrial knitted fashion accessory, made in Slovenia from the finest noble materials. The resulting product is soft, comfortable, durable and easy to care for.
Scarf Carnation
Carnation is a soft wool scarf with a pattern that is a modern interpretation of the Slovenian embroidery heritage. The design, created by Ksenija Baraga, translates the traditional hand embroidered floral motif into an industrial knitted fashion accessory, made in Slovenia from the finest noble materials. The resulting product is soft, comfortable, durable and easy to care for.
The scarf collection is part of the permanent collection of the Department of Crafts and Trades at the Slovenian Ethnographic Museum (SEM) and part of the permanent collection of the National Museum of Slovenia. In 2015, it was awarded the Brumen Foundation's Excellence Award at the 7th Biennial of Slovenian Visual Communication. The scarves have been shown at the following exhibitions: MAN and TIME - the first 100 years, a permanent exhibition at the SEM; The Treasures of Slovenian Creativity at the Qujiang Museum of Fine Arts in Xi'an, China; Lace Ties at the SEM; Images of Time at the Cankarjev dom, Ljubljana; the 7th Biennial of Slovenian Visual Communication at the National Gallery, Ljubljana; Design Month; Pop-up Home; and Let’s Wear Scarves at the ULUPUH Gallery in Zagreb.
The product is designed and knitted in Slovenia, helping to maintain employment and expertise at the remaining artisan knitwear producers, Žalac and Pislak. The final manual finish of the scarf is the work of Ksenija Baraga from Baragaga, d.o.o. The cardboard packaging features a black and white pattern similar to that of the knitted fabric. The packaging is produced by AKI, d.o.o. in Izlake and is made from 94% recycled cardboard and 6% cellulose fibre. It features a black and white graphic motif which provides information about the production process. The basic drawing of the motif is digitised into pixels, which are then translated into stitches by the knitting machine. A single pixel is translated into one stitch, with 365,200 stitches required to create one scarf. The scarf comes with a short graphic-textual explanation of the pattern in either Slovenian or English. Ksenija Baraga designed the product, Ana Baraga realised the design.
