The Flying With Words bookmark is a functional object that enables users to track their reading progress in a book. It is also a piece of jewellery that can be used to enhance the appearance of a book, room or person. The design evokes the image of a feather writing a word or a bird traversing a vast expanse.

The bookmark is made of second-hand materials. It combines traditional goldsmithing and silversmithing techniques with a modern material, titanium. As a work of art, it represents the transformation of heavy scrap metal into the lightweight form of a feather. The titanium is sourced from a Slovenian manufacturer that adheres to sustainable production practices. The other scrap metals used are mainly copper and brass. The selected materials have aesthetic and artistic value: when heated, titanium assumes golden brown, purple or blue hues, while copper turns red and brass gold. The interplay between these colours and materials is unique to each bookmark.

Each bookmark is individually handcrafted, forged and engraved, making it unique. By heating the metal and forging the contours, a different bookmark is created each time, making each one special. The product also allows for a dedication or message to be engraved or hammered in at a later stage.

A thread, leather cord or chain can be attached to the bookmark, making it suitable for use as an extra bookmark, to hang in a room or to wear as a pendant.
