The Wood'n'roll kitchen rolling pin icombines traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design.
The initial inspiration for the Wood'n'Roll rolling pin came from designer's experience of rolling out cake dough when the designer and his wife didn't have a rolling pin in the house and they used an empty bottle to roll the dough. Its rounded edges proved to be a good solution.
The characteristic curve of the rolling pin’s wooden central part flows seamlessly into the comfortable rotating handles for better grip and ease of use, while the rolling pin can be easily wiped clean with a cloth after use. The end of the handle is rounded in a slightly taut curve. For ease of use, the handles are individually rotatable, allowing for a more natural hand position when rolling. A hole is drilled in each side of the central part, through which a long screw with a bearing is screwed in to act as a turning axis. The rolling pin is made entirely without the use of adhesives, only by turning, initially by hand, now on a copy lathe, with plans to upgrade to CNC. Combining tradition and contemporary design, the rolling pin encourages users to change their lifestyles, prepare a variety of home-cooked food, socialise and be creative.
Slovenian handicrafts encompass a wide range of trades with a long and distinguished tradition. However, handicraft producers must adapt to the current situation and develop new products, as it is challenging for them to compete with industrial production. The industry has demonstrated resilience through the opening of new craft centres, shifts in home accessory trends and the growing prominence of natural materials such as stone, wood and metal. The key to creating new handicraft products that are recognisable and appealing to modern consumers lies not in nostalgic revival of decorative souvenirs, but in an in-depth analysis of consumer needs and habits and in responding to them with well-designed, contemporary products.
The rolling pin is crafted from solid Slovenian pear and maple wood, with select pieces featuring beech and lime. The handles were originally made of solid wood, but later versions feature kerrock, copper, or brass. They are available in a diverse range of colours and can be personalised with engraving or printing. For delivery or transport, they are packed in cardboard tubes, which can be further protected by a paper bag or cardboard box.
The Wood'n'Roll rolling pin has been published and selected for exhibitions on multiple occasions, it also recieved the Woodworking Design of the Year 2021 accolade.
